On Tuesday, October 31st, and Wednesday, November 1st, RTS-Orlando hosted Dr. Carl Trueman of Westminster Theological Seminary for our 2017 Current Read. This event is the brainchild of our librarians and involves the seminary family reading a book together—in this case, Trueman’s Luther on the Christian Life—and then inviting the author to deliver lectures on the book. As Tuesday was the 500th anniversary of Luther’s posting of the 95 Theses, it was a great opportunity for our students, staff, and faculty to hear from a world-class scholar on Luther.

Screen Shot 2017-11-01 at 1.41.17 PMDr. Trueman delivered four lectures on the topic of Luther:

  1. Luther’s Christian Life
  2. Life under the Cross
  3. The Sacramental Life
  4. The Liturgy of Life

A repeated theme in Trueman’s treatment of Luther is the importance of Luther’s life—his own struggles, historical context, personal battles with others (like Erasmus, Karlstadt, and Zwingli), and so forth—on the development of his theology. He also shared interesting insights into Calvin’s appropriation of Luther, as well as what modern Protestants and Reformed folks can learn (or not learn) from Luther.

On Wednesday, we gathered between lectures 3 and 4 to have a community lunch and Q&A with Dr. Trueman.

We are very thankful for Dr. Trueman’s visit with us and the RTS team that worked on the logistics.
